The state began funding palliative care at home less than three years ago. Thanks to this, terminally ill individuals can spend their last days at home, receiving assistance from a mobile team. The service is provided regardless of the patient's financial situation — medical indications are required. At the organization Hospiss māja, demand has increased by almost 50% over the past year. They note that many patients still seek help too late — sometimes just a few days before death. This indicates a lack of information about available assistance. At the same time, the capabilities of mobile teams are limited. Medical professionals and caregivers visit the patient, perform necessary procedures, assist with hygiene and nutrition, and then move on to the next person. They cannot stay with the patient throughout the entire day. The situation is particularly challenging for solitary patients and families where relatives have to balance work with caring for a seriously ill person. One potential solution could be inpatient hospices, which exist in many countries; however, such an option is not yet available in Latvia.
