The tour "Jelgava Prison Then and Now" will be conducted by guide Inga Pīlāne and an experienced former prison employee. It is planned that the tours will become regular and will take place every Wednesday at 12 PM. The first tour, as an exception, will be held today, Thursday. If interest remains consistently high, tours will also be held on Saturdays starting in October. During the two-hour walk, visitors will be able to go behind the walls of Jelgava prison, learn about one of the oldest prisons in Latvia and its more than a century-long history. Participants will be shown the grounds and historical buildings, as well as told about various stages of the prison's development, related events, and people whose fates were closely intertwined with this place. The tour is not intended for preschool-aged children. Parents are responsible for children attending the tour. The territory of the former prison has been preserved in its authentic form and is not adapted for people with disabilities, including those with mobility, vision, or hearing impairments. Individual photo sessions and artistic photography are also prohibited during the tours. It was previously reported that the Jelgava municipality received from the Ministry of Justice the territory of the closed prison at Palidzibas Street, 3 and 7 for gratuitous use and management. The municipality is currently developing a concept for the further development of this territory. Already in the first month, proposals were received to use the former prison for filming feature films. In this regard, the rental cost for filming and creating audiovisual works has been approved. The rental cost for premises on the territory of the former Jelgava prison for such purposes is set at 0.15 euros per day per square meter.
