He published his idea on social media, stating that such a name would be 'more prestigious and beautiful' for the residents of the state. Following this, the White House circulated an image of a map of the United States, where the word Mexico in the state's name is partially replaced with America. However, the initiative almost immediately faced resistance. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham stated on Fox News that the issue of renaming is not even being considered. According to her, the state has had this name for as long as the United States has existed, so there is no basis for changing it. Additionally, the governor accused the president of trying to divert public attention from more pressing issues, particularly rising fuel prices. It is important to understand that a presidential statement alone is not enough to change the official name of a state. Such a decision would require going through the legally prescribed procedures. Some American media also note that the idea of renaming New Mexico initially appeared online as a joke, and only later gained widespread attention. This is not the first time Trump has proposed changing familiar geographical names. At the end of August, he announced the renaming of Lake Ontario to American Lake. A few days earlier, the president also mentioned renaming the Strait of Hormuz to Trump Strait, but later clarified that it was a joke. Earlier, after returning to the White House in 2025, Trump announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Thus, the proposal to change the name of New Mexico has become another initiative by the president related to the renaming of geographical objects.
