The Chinese state company Jilin Chemical Fiber Group supplied 46 tons of polyacrylonitrile — a chemical polymer necessary for the production of carbon fiber — to Russia. This was reported by Politico, Daily Telegraph, and Meduza, citing obtained documents. According to the publications, the recipient of the cargo was the company "Alabuga-Volokno," which is part of the state corporation "Rosatom." The enterprise is located in the special economic zone "Alabuga" in Tatarstan, where the production of Shahed-type drones has been established since 2023. According to journalists, the shipment was classified as the export of synthetic fibers for civilian use. A customs code typically used for non-military goods was applied for this purpose. David Albright, an expert at the Washington Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), explained that polyacrylonitrile is used in the production of carbon fiber, which is essential for reinforcing the wings and internal components of drones. In his estimation, the supplied volume of raw materials could be sufficient for the production of at least 1,300 drones. Chinese components have repeatedly been found in Russian drones. However, as noted by Politico, the published documents may be the first to indicate direct supplies from China of materials specifically needed for drone production. It is important to note that the conclusions are based on documents published by the media.
