Ukrainian Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko announced on Monday that he has submitted his resignation. The decision came after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) launched an investigation into a possible corruption scheme involving employees of the Attorney General's Office. Over the weekend, NABU detectives conducted searches in the offices of the Attorney General's Office. According to investigators, the criminal scheme operated under the direction of an official from the agency and provided protection to illegal call centers engaged in telephone fraud and money laundering. Investigators claim that the bribes received were used to purchase real estate, jewelry, and other expensive assets. NABU also published photographs of a safe containing large sums of cash and reported that it has identified five alleged participants in the scheme. Their names have not been officially disclosed. However, the investigation materials do not publicly state that Ruslan Kravchenko has been charged with any offenses. He categorically denies any involvement in illegal activities. As recently as Sunday, Kravchenko stated on social media that he considers all accusations to be completely unfounded. The next day, he announced his decision to leave his post. "I do not want the Attorney General's Office to be used as a tool for political confrontation," Kravchenko wrote on Telegram, emphasizing that his position regarding the accusations remains unchanged. The investigation unfolds against the backdrop of Ukraine's years-long struggle against corruption, which remains one of the key demands of both Ukrainian society and the country's international partners. In recent years, corruption investigations have repeatedly implicated high-ranking officials and representatives of power. According to the Switzerland-based organization Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC), around 60,000 people may be employed in illegal call centers operating in Ukraine, making this type of criminal activity one of the most extensive forms of organized crime in the region. Thus, the resignation of the attorney general has become one of the most high-profile personnel decisions in Ukraine in recent months. The investigations by NABU and SAP are ongoing, and their results could determine the further development of this case.
