The museum is experiencing a lack of space: part of the collection is stored away, and the number of visitors must be limited due to the characteristics of the historic building. In 2025, the Borghese Gallery was visited by more than 630,000 people — a record figure. Currently, options for creating additional exhibition spaces and infrastructure for visitors are being explored. Among the possible solutions are the construction of underground halls or the repurposing of existing buildings within the complex. However, the idea has raised concerns among organizations dedicated to protecting Rome's historical heritage. They fear that construction work could alter the appearance of the Borghese villa and the surrounding historic park. Gallery director Francesca Cappelletti emphasizes that there is no final project yet. According to her, the museum is only exploring possible expansion options, and any decisions must take into account the historical and archaeological value of the area. The Borghese Gallery houses one of the most famous art collections in Italy. Among its main treasures are works by Caravaggio, Bernini, and Canova.
