A huge sinkhole has formed near the mansion owned by Nicolas Cage on the Malibu coast. A significant portion of the driveway leading to the garage collapsed into the sinkhole. Published photographs show debris of asphalt and concrete, fragments of fencing, as well as a construction portable toilet that ended up at the bottom of the sinkhole. Its initial dimensions were estimated to be about 30 by 30 feet, or nine by nine meters.  The incident occurred early in the morning on September 8 on Sea Level Drive in western Malibu. Around 5:45 AM, firefighters and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies arrived after reports of a suspected gas line damage. At the scene, they discovered the collapsed driveway and a gas leak. SoCalGas employees localized the leak a few hours later. As a precaution, gas supply was temporarily shut off along a section of the street approximately 26 meters long. The private road near the damaged area was closed. City officials assigned five homes so-called red tags, indicating a temporary entry ban due to potential danger. Specialists continue to assess the soil stability and the condition of surrounding buildings. There have been no reports of injuries. At the time of the incident, the house was reportedly vacant: renovations were being carried out in the building. The suspected cause of the collapse was coastal erosion, exacerbated by heavy rains, high tides, and strong surf. These conditions are linked to the residual effects of Hurricane Marie, which later weakened to a tropical storm and did not make landfall. Warnings for high waves and possible coastal flooding were in effect along the Southern California coast. The mansion is located on a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway. According to property records, Cage purchased the house in 2024 for $10.5 million. The building has an area of about 4,000 square feet, or approximately 372 square meters. The house, featuring panoramic ocean views and a private rooftop terrace, was built in the 1990s by entrepreneur Jose Lieberman and remained in his family for a long time. Representatives for the 62-year-old actor have not publicly commented on the incident. The extent of the damage to the mansion itself remains unknown: the collapse of the driveway has been confirmed, but there are no official reports of damage to the building. The situation remains potentially dangerous due to ongoing coastal erosion. City services and the gas company are surveying the area and neighboring homes to determine if it is safe to restore the road and access to the property.
