The prosecutor's office continues to oversee the investigation of the criminal case initiated after two dogs attacked a group of kindergarten pupils during a walk in Carnikava. According to the agency, the investigation is being conducted under the article of the Criminal Law that provides for responsibility for crimes against public safety and public order. The State Police, municipal police, and the Food and Veterinary Service are participating in the investigation. Dagnis Krasts, prosecutor of the Pieriga Prosecutor's Office, emphasized that the main task now is to establish all the circumstances of the incident while simultaneously protecting the interests of the affected children as much as possible. According to him, this is why only information that cannot affect the course of the investigation is being communicated to the public. Special attention is being paid to ensuring that the children do not suffer from further psychological trauma. Therefore, forensic medical experts determine the severity of their injuries based on medical documents, without the need for the children to participate again in investigative actions. The prosecutor's office emphasizes that this approach does not mean delaying the investigation; on the contrary, it allows for the simultaneous protection of minors' rights and the collection of necessary evidence. The investigation is also continuing its work with the dogs' owner, who, according to the prosecutor's office, is cooperating with law enforcement agencies. Currently, both dogs are isolated and no longer pose a threat to the public. Their future will be determined after the investigation is completed and the results of all appointed examinations are received. The agency specifically noted that the lack of detailed information in the public domain does not indicate inaction by the investigation. At the pre-trial stage, it is important not only to conduct the necessary procedural actions but also to thoroughly verify all collected evidence. The prosecutor's office also called for respect for the right of the affected children and their families to privacy and to avoid causing them further psychological trauma. It should be noted that the tragic incident occurred on September 4. During a coordinated walk outside the kindergarten, two ownerless dogs ran up to a group of 19 children, a teacher, and a teaching assistant and attacked the children. As a result of the incident, six children were injured, two of whom were hospitalized. A teacher who tried to protect the pupils was also injured. The animals' owner, entrepreneur Ivo Vasilevskis, previously told TV3 that the dogs ran out of the yard after workers repairing the sewage system accidentally opened the gate. According to him, the animals are currently in a dog hotel in Baltezers, and new owners are being sought for them, with plans to separate the dogs based on the breeder's recommendation. The prosecutor's office and the State Police promise to inform about the results of the investigation after the publication of this information no longer poses a risk to the investigation and violates the rights of the victims.
