The Riga Radio and Television Tower in Zakusala, closed to visitors since 2019, has finally awaited the start of a large-scale reconstruction. On Thursday, the Latvian State Radio and Television Center signed a construction contract worth nearly 39 million euros, reports [TV3 News](https://tv3.lv/zinas/latvija/sabiedriba/zakusalas-tornis-piedzivos-verienigu-parbuvi-kas-pec-trim-gadiem-sagaida-apmekletajus/). The work will last about three years. During this time, it is planned not only to modernize the engineering systems but also to completely update the public spaces of the tower. After the reconstruction, visitors will have access to new observation decks at heights of about 100 and 130 meters, glass viewing cubes extending beyond the structure, as well as an extreme attraction — the "walk in the clouds." With safety measures, it will be possible to step onto an open platform at a height of 220 meters. "This is not just a construction contract. It is a promise to society to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the most important facility in the industry both today and in the future," emphasized the Chairman of the Board of the Latvian State Radio and Television Center, Girts Ozols. During the reconstruction, the tower will continue to perform its primary function — providing radio, television broadcasting, and electronic communication services. That is why builders will have to work without stopping the functioning equipment. Project author Sergey Nikiforov noted that after the update, the tower will become not only a tourist attraction but also an operational infrastructure center. At the same time, some of the initial plans have been postponed for now. In particular, the creation of a park with a miniature map of Latvia and the highest Foucault pendulum has been moved to the second phase of the project. In addition to the reconstruction of the tower itself, plans are also in place to improve the transport accessibility of Zakusala and to build a pier so that it will be possible to reach the area by water in the summer.
