The issue came to the forefront after a public initiative on the Manabalss.lv portal demanding the cancellation of such payments gathered more than 10,000 signatures. A joint meeting of the Legal Commission of the Saeima and its sub-commission on constitutional and judicial policy will take place in the Red Hall of the parliament at 11 Jekaba Street. It is expected that the process of adopting such amendments may be quite lengthy: the current convocation of parliament may begin their consideration, but it may have to be completed by the next Saeima. The author of the public initiative, Deputy Chairperson of the Latvian Union of Healthcare and Social Care Workers Andis Feldmanis, believes that there are no objective grounds for providing Saeima deputies with a special compensation system, as other employees in the state and municipal sectors pay for work-related transportation and housing expenses themselves. Previously, KNAB also pointed out that the current compensation system has shortcomings that may create opportunities for the misuse of the system.
