Chinese companies working with AI are creating some of the best open models of artificial intelligence in the world, the source code of which is available to users for adaptation, while American developers prefer a closed approach. The proposal, part of the Chinese leader's initiative 'On Open and Inclusive AI', includes a promise to 'support cooperation in the development and application of large language models', according to a transcript of Xi's speech distributed by the state broadcaster CCTV. According to Xi, the initiative also envisions the creation of 'specialized research and training programs on AI' for BRICS countries with the aim of 'forming an open ecosystem of artificial intelligence'. The BRICS grouping, which includes China, Russia, and India, was established in 2009 as a platform for major emerging economies seeking greater influence in institutions dominated by Western powers. Xi also called for the establishment of a 'broad, consensus-based global regulatory system for AI'. Xi is expected to visit the United States this month for talks with President Donald Trump; the topic of AI regulation is likely to be one of the key issues amid growing concerns that the world may lose control over rapidly evolving technology.
