The State Education Development Agency (VIAA) summarized the results of last year's diagnostic work in natural sciences for 9th grade students. The average score was 44.8% of the possible points — this is the lowest figure among the main final assessment works of basic school graduates. For comparison, the average result of the centralized exam in the Latvian language reached 56.2%, in mathematics — 54.8%, and in the monitoring work in English — 70%. Students performed best on tasks that required demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the study material. In this part, the average result was 56.8%. Tasks related to practical skills proved to be much more challenging. Here, the average score dropped to 35.7%. The most serious difficulties arose with tasks on analytical thinking. In the category "analytically reasons," students scored an average of only 29.2% of the possible points. At the same time, tasks at the level of "knows and applies" were completed significantly more successfully — on average 54.7%. Results for individual subjects were relatively close. Students performed best in biology (49.5%), followed by physics (43.6%) and chemistry (42.3%). These results are particularly important because this academic year, for the first time, ninth graders will take a full-fledged centralized exam in natural sciences. Unlike last year's diagnostic work, the exam will be conducted under the supervision of external observers. This should ensure a more objective assessment of knowledge, and the results can be used by schools when admitting students to the 10th grade. At the same time, this year, a minimum passing score in natural sciences will not be introduced. In this respect, the exam will still differ from the mandatory state exams in mathematics and the Latvian language. According to VIAA, the structure of the exam will remain close to the diagnostic work. About 35% of the tasks will be dedicated to biology, physics, and chemistry. The main focus will be not only on checking knowledge but also on the ability to explain natural phenomena, analyze data, conduct research, argue answers, and draw conclusions. The agency plans to publish a detailed program of the new state exam by November 1, and a special seminar for school leaders on organizing state assessment works will take place on September 22.
