The Latvian national team was unable to reach the quarter-finals of the European Volleyball Championship. In the Round of 16 match, Ugis Krastins' team lost to one of the tournament's main favorites — the Polish national team — with scores of 17:25, 16:25, 16:25. The most productive player for the Latvian team was Kristers Landsmans, who scored 11 points. Janis Medenis recorded eight points, while Gustavs Freimanis contributed seven, successfully blocking three times. For the Poles, the standout was Tomasz Fornal, who scored 19 points, six of which were from blocks. Poland effectively decided the first set early on, making a 5:0 run and quickly establishing a comfortable lead. In the second set, the Latvians led for a while, but the opponent responded with a series of six won rallies and confidently brought the set to victory again. In the third set, the Latvian team also started the match well but could not maintain the pace against one of the strongest teams in the world. Despite the loss, reaching the playoffs can be considered a successful result for the Latvian team. In the group stage, they achieved victories over Romania and Turkey, and then, finishing fourth in Group D, advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in a long while. For Latvia, this was only their third appearance in the final stage of the European Championship. The team qualified for the tournament as the best among the second-placed teams in the qualifying groups. Poland entered the playoffs as the reigning European champion and the leader of the world ranking. In the group stage, the Poles won four out of five matches and finished first in their group. The history of the rivalry also favored the Polish national team. The only victory over Poland for the Latvians came back in 1993 during the World Championship qualifiers. Since then, all official meetings have been won by the Polish volleyball players. The European Championship is taking place from September 9 to 26 in Bulgaria, Romania, Finland, and Italy. The decisive matches of the tournament will be held in Milan.
