Among residents who have never used a loan, 63% indicate that they do not want to take on financial obligations. 45% say that a loan is unnecessary as their income is sufficient. The survey results show that caution regarding financial future is also significant. Of the respondents who have never borrowed, 24% said that the future seems too uncertain to them, while 19% stated that they are afraid of borrowing. Another 13% cite the lack of stable income as a reason. Less than 2% of those who have never taken loans indicated that they attempted to borrow but were denied. As noted by Intars Mikelsons, the executive director of "Kredītinformācijas birojs", part of society approaches borrowing very cautiously and does not perceive credit as a given everyday financial tool. Any loan means obligations in the future, so before taking one, it is important to assess both the necessity of the loan and one's ability to repay it. At the same time, the fact that nearly a quarter do not borrow due to uncertainty about the future shows how important the feeling of financial security is when making such decisions. The survey data reveal differences in the reasons cited by women and men. Women more often than men stated that they do not borrow due to uncertainty about the future - 29% and 15% respectively. The fear of borrowing is also more frequently mentioned by women - 23% compared to 14% of men. In turn, men more often responded that they did not need a loan as their income is sufficient - 52% of men and 40% of women who have never borrowed noted this. The survey of residents was conducted in May 2026 by "Norstat", interviewing 1002 residents of Latvia aged 18 to 74.
