During the meeting, current security issues and global challenges were discussed, including Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and the regulation of artificial intelligence, as well as the need for UN reform. The President of Latvia noted the increased resistance from Russia towards the Baltic states and other countries supporting Ukraine, resulting in a heightened risk of escalation. E. Rinkēvičs condemned Russia's actions, which have intensified missile and drone attacks on the civilian population and civilian infrastructure of Ukraine. E. Rinkēvičs also stated that Russian attacks on Ukraine's grain infrastructure pose a serious threat to global food security. During the meeting, E. Rinkēvičs informed the UN Secretary-General about the joint call from the President of Latvia and the leaders of several countries to create a mechanism for monitoring and regulating artificial intelligence models. The President emphasized the importance of working towards the establishment of unified standards, involving European countries and small states in this process. The President also noted that, in Latvia's opinion, the UN system requires a comprehensive reform that would enhance the ability of the UN Security Council to make decisions on global challenges. As is known, the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, is on a working visit to the United States from September 17 to 28. During the visit, a series of meetings are also planned in Los Angeles and San Diego together with representatives of Latvian enterprises. The working visit to the USA will conclude with the President of Latvia's participation in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Latvian School in Los Angeles.
