According to the State Border Guard (VRS), the first phase of work has already been completed on eight out of 11 sections of the border with Belarus. The agency notes that the construction of intelligent infrastructure on Latvia's eastern border is taking place under challenging conditions. According to VRS, the methods used by violators are becoming increasingly aggressive and sophisticated. Border guards are recording targeted damage to surveillance poles, distribution cabinets, and cables. VRS believes that this is an attempt to hinder the implementation of technological infrastructure and delay the launch of the new surveillance system. Severe storms have also caused additional damage to certain sections of the border. Work is also ongoing at the Latvia-Russia border. Here, builders have to deal with complex terrain and specific soil conditions. Nevertheless, favorable weather has allowed for the construction of 28% of the planned infrastructure in the quarter. Upon completion of the project, the entire external eastern border of Latvia is expected to be equipped with systems that allow for real-time responses to threats, including hybrid threats, organized crime, and illegal migration.
