On Tuesday, September 29, the government approved the budget commitments necessary for the implementation of the project. The funding for the EU program "Digital Europe" will amount to 328,039 euros, with another 328,039 euros allocated as state co-financing. The State Agency for Digital Development (VDAA) will coordinate the pilot project in Latvia. Partners will include the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) and the State Police. VDAA will be responsible for the technical implementation of the European digital identity wallet. CSDD is tasked with developing a solution for issuing mobile driver's licenses and providing the necessary data. In turn, the State Police must create a mechanism for verifying digital licenses and test it during traffic control. For the implementation of the project in 2026–2029, long-term budget commitments of 442,854 euros are permitted. Of these, 328,039 euros are intended for co-financing, while another 114,815 euros are for preliminary financing. If necessary, VDAA may create temporary jobs for the duration of the project. The pilot phase itself is expected to last two years from the signing of the grant agreement. Thus, the familiar plastic driver's licenses in Latvia will receive a digital alternative that can be stored in the European digital wallet.
