A postage stamp has been issued in Latvia in honor of one of the most decorated basketball players in history — Uljana Semjonova. The new release quickly became popular: in the first days after its release, buyers purchased more than a third of the entire print run. This was reported by the program "900 seconds" on [TV3](https://tv3.lv/zinas/latvija/par-godu-uljanai-semjonovai-izdota-pastmarka-pirmajas-dienas-izpirkta-vairak-neka-tresdala-tirazas/). The design of the stamp is based on a photograph from the athlete's personal archive, which is stored in the Latvian Sports Museum. The author of the work, graphic designer Jānis Klaučs, stated that he consciously chose to avoid a traditional sports theme when selecting the image. According to him, many asked why there was no basketball in the stamp, but he decided to make Semjonova herself the main element of the composition. > "In this photo, she is captured from a very successful angle. Perhaps it is not as dynamic, but the image turned out to be very strong. This gaze is somewhat contemplative, directed upwards," Klaučs explained. The materials for the work were gathered by the designer at the Latvian Sports Museum, where an exhibition dedicated to the famous basketball player is currently being held. Among the exhibits are a championship ring with a diamond, awarded after Semjonova was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Olympic medals, sports shoes, and other memorabilia that tell about her sports career. Latvijas Pasts notes that the release of the stamp is not only a tribute to Semjonova's sporting achievements but also an acknowledgment of her public activities. > "We believe that we need to tell more about people who inspire us. About people who purposefully do their work and at the same time do not forget about others. This postage stamp is dedicated to a person whose greatness is timeless — both on the court and in the heart," said Girts Rudzitis, chairman of the board of Latvijas Pasts. The high demand in the first days after the release shows that interest in Uljana Semjonova remains high many years after the end of her sports career.
