One such example is trolleybus route No. 1 — the oldest in Riga, opened back in 1947. For certain sections of this route, there is no equivalent direct alternative, and therefore it plays an important role in the daily commutes of Riga residents. However, for several years now, the operation of trolleybus No. 1 has been periodically suspended. The first suspension of service occurred in 2021 due to roadworks on Gertrudes Street, and after two years, it was resumed. Currently, the operation of route No. 1 has been suspended since August 10. More than 300 signatures have been collected on the platform manabalss.lv demanding the restoration of trolleybus route No. 1, which provided communication through the center of Riga between Petersala and Valmieras Street, located in the Latgale suburb. The local government promises that after the completion of the repair works, public transport will resume on Gertrudes Street; however, it is still unknown whether the route will remain the same — in particular, whether it will still run from Valmieras Street to Petersala. "Currently, repair works are underway, and we will definitely inform about their completion. Residents of Gertrudes Street will certainly not be left without public transport," promised Baiba Bartashevicha-Feldmane, head of the public relations department of Rīgas satiksme. "Changes in the bus or possibly trolleybus route are possible. We will assess the situation and will definitely keep the public informed." Riga residents are also concerned about changes in the operation of trolleybus route No. 13, which no longer runs on Saturdays and Sundays. This direct route is important for city dwellers wishing to visit the Riga Central Market in the mornings on weekends. Now, such a trip requires a transfer. "Our previous analysis showed that trolleybus No. 13 was actively used for commuting to and from work; however, on weekends, passenger traffic was low," commented Bartashevicha-Feldmane. "Currently, there are no plans to resume route No. 13, as both financial and staffing resources need to be considered — in particular, the availability of drivers, which, frankly speaking, has been a serious challenge for some time now." Although it is possible to reach the Central Market with one transfer, a representative of Rīgas satiksme acknowledged that this option is certainly less convenient.
