This feast is not one of the twelve major feasts, as the event did not occur during the earthly life of the Mother of God, but it is very revered and significant. **What is remembered in the Church on October 14, 2026** An amazing story took place in the middle of the 10th century at the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople. This temple housed great relics associated with the Mother of God — her veil, robe, and belt. According to tradition, during the reign of Emperor Leo VI the Wise, in 910, the city was besieged by hordes of enemies. The besiegers had a numerical advantage, and it seemed that the enemy was about to break through the city walls. The temple became a refuge for most of the inhabitants of Constantinople, who gathered for a communal prayer. People, including the emperor, empress, courtiers, and common folk, fervently prayed to the Lord and the Mother of God for salvation from the enemies. And during the all-night vigil, a fool for Christ named Andrew, along with his disciple Epiphanius, saw the Mother of God herself kneeling among the people, offering prayers. Then the Mother of God rose from her knees, approached the Altar, and, after praying once more, removed her veil from her head and covered the praying people in the temple with it. The veil shone in the hands of its mistress, supported by angels and a multitude of saints. And then, just as she had appeared, the Mother of God disappeared. The next day, the enemy unexpectedly retreated from the city. Thus, Constantinople was saved from destruction, and its inhabitants from death. The reasons for the retreat of the Saracens remain unknown. The celebration began only in the middle of the 12th century. Moreover, the feast was established specifically by the Russian Orthodox Church. **The meaning of the feast** The appearance of the Mother of God became a significant event, and everyone shared the story with each other, resulting in the practice of turning to the saint for protection and cover. **What do people ask the Mother of God for on the Protection?** This day has been considered special since ancient times, when all prayers are believed to be heard. The Mother of God is prayed to as an intercessor from any troubles; people ask her for healing, for the resolution of material problems, for finding a spouse or child, and for a happy family life. Prayer also helps to overcome temptations and seductions. Prayers are also offered for victory over enemies. **What can be done on October 14, 2026** — One should go to church. — It is necessary to maintain a good mood and thank the Mother of God for everything. — Gather the last harvest and finish work in the garden and orchard. — It is customary to bake pancakes. — A great day to gather the last harvest of mushrooms. — Be sure to engage in good deeds and charity. **What cannot be done on October 14, 2026** — One should not engage in household chores and heavy physical labor. — Do not make any empty promises.
