On social media, drivers are comparing the cost of policies and trying to understand why some have to pay significantly more while others find their insurance cheaper. The discussion was sparked by a post on Threads. One motorist shared that his insurance had increased by more than 60% over the year. “Help me understand why OCTA has risen so much in price? Last year I paid 51 euros for 12 months, and now it’s already 82 euros. I understand inflation… But maybe it’s also because in 2025 and 2026 I was stopped twice by the police on Pasta Street in Jelgava? Now I have three penalty points. Has your insurance also increased like this?” the man asked. In the comments, it became clear that the situation for drivers is completely different. Mārcis shared his way to save on insurance. According to his observations, the place of residence declaration, car brand, and driving experience can significantly affect the cost of the policy. “You need to declare your residence further from Riga — it will be cheaper. If it’s Riga, BMW, little experience, and the car is not owned, the insurance will be more expensive. But if you replace the BMW with an Opel, the price will drop. Two fines for improper parking did not affect my OCTA cost. I even buy a gold OCTA,” he said. However, not everyone noticed the increase. For example, Toms claims that his insurance gets cheaper every year. On the other hand, Liene faced the opposite situation. “Today I registered a new car, and the OCTA for a year turned out to be twice as expensive as a year ago. During this time, there have been no incidents, and there are no penalty points. I am declared and actually live in a rural area. The broker said that prices have unfortunately risen significantly,” the woman wrote. Even more surprising is Liga’s story: if her annual insurance used to cost 139 euros, now the policy is only asking for 73 euros. It turns out that while some motorists are outraged by the sharp price increase, others unexpectedly save dozens of euros.
