The composition appeared on music streaming platforms on October 9. Its release coincides with the 25th anniversary of the singer's third studio album, Britney, the anniversary reissue of which is scheduled for November 6, 2026. Along with Spears and Timberlake, producers and songwriters Alex Greggs and Bradley Daymond worked on the song. Originally, the composition was intended for the Britney album, released in 2001, but it did not make it to the final tracklist. However, for the singer's devoted fans, the release was not a complete surprise. An unofficial version of the song appeared online back in 2008, but the official release only happened now. The content of the song is particularly intriguing. In it, the heroine addresses her ex-boyfriend, who is trying to replace her with another girl. However, she is confident that the new chosen one will never be able to take her place. Against the backdrop of the complicated relationship history between Spears and Timberlake, the lyrics of the composition take on additional meaning. Moreover, the song was written in 2001, when the artists were still in a romantic relationship. Britney and Justin met as children while participating in the television show "The Mickey Mouse Club." Their romance began in 1999 and ended in 2002. The breakup of the stars became one of the most talked-about stories in pop culture in the early 2000s. After the split, Timberlake released the hit Cry Me a River, the music video for which sparked numerous discussions due to the resemblance of the lead actress to Britney Spears. In 2023, the singer once again drew attention to their relationship, discussing it in her autobiographical book The Woman in Me. Interestingly, She’ll Never Be Me is not the only composition that the former lovers worked on together. Timberlake also contributed to the creation of the song What It’s Like to Be Me, which is included in the original Britney album. The anniversary reissue of the record will include 23 compositions. In addition to well-known hits, fans will hear several rare recordings, including Am I a Sinner, When I Say So, My Big Secret, and the studio version of Right Now (Taste the Victory). The new release marks the first officially released song by Britney Spears after her collaboration with rapper will.i.am on the composition Mind Your Business in 2023. Thus, after a quarter of a century, fans have the opportunity to hear a musical testament to the era when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were one of the most famous couples in the global entertainment industry.
