“I need to find myself again”: Elina Svitolina announced her divorce from Gael Monfils

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina, ranked sixth in the WTA world rankings, announced her separation from her husband — French tennis player Gael Monfils. The athlete shared this on social media, as reported by the LETA agency citing AFP. > "I need to find myself again, and I cannot do that in our marriage," the 32-year-old Svitolina admitted. She emphasized that the decision to divorce was one of the hardest in her life. > "This is the heaviest truth I have ever had to face, and the hardest thing I have ever had to say to someone I love," the tennis player wrote. ## Five years of marriage and a daughter Svitolina and Monfils got married in July 2021. The couple has a four-year-old daughter, Skai. Both athletes have competed at the highest level of professional tennis for many years. Svitolina is currently ranked sixth in the WTA rankings, while Monfils reached sixth place in the ATP men's rankings at the peak of his career. ## Monfils recently announced his retirement The news of the divorce came shortly after 40-year-old Monfils announced his retirement from professional tennis. Previously, the Frenchman planned to say goodbye to fans at the Masters tournament in Paris, which will take place at the end of October, but this month he announced the end of his career. Monfils also received a wild card for the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon, taking place this week, but declined to participate, citing personal reasons.
