American company SpaceX lifted restrictions on the use of the Starlink satellite network in Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday. This was reported by DW, which was referenced by the LETA agency. Journalists asked the American president whether he had discussed the restrictions with SpaceX owner Elon Musk. Earlier, The Washington Post reported possible contacts between them on this issue. "I don’t want to comment on that. Whether I called or someone else did doesn’t matter. I think what’s important is that he restored everything again," Trump replied. However, just a few hours earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the speed of Starlink's operation had still not been restored after the restrictions imposed in mid-October. Thus, the statements from Washington and Kyiv currently diverge: Trump speaks of the removal of restrictions, while Zelensky points to ongoing communication issues. The first disruptions in Starlink's operation were recorded on the night of October 14. It turned out that the satellite network had stopped providing connectivity to devices moving at high speeds. This became a serious problem for the Ukrainian army. The military version of the satellite system, known as Starshield, is used for controlling drones, including for strikes on targets in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories. The restriction on high-speed communication is particularly significant for such operations, as drones need to maintain connectivity while in motion. At the same time, according to publicly available information, Ukraine does not use Starshield for strikes on targets directly within Russian territory, as that country is not within the network's coverage area. The question of who initiated the restrictions also remains open. The British newspaper The Telegraph and the American The Wall Street Journal reported that the relevant proposal allegedly came from Elon Musk himself. According to these publications, the entrepreneur discussed the restrictions with the Pentagon and received support from the U.S. military department. However, the White House stated that it had not issued any orders to limit Starlink's operation. Despite Trump's statement, it remains unclear whether the previous capabilities of satellite communication for the Ukrainian military have been fully restored. Zelensky's latest statement indicates that the consequences of the restrictions continued to be felt even after the supposed resolution by SpaceX.
