Latvia ranks third in the European Union for tuberculosis incidence. Approximately 300 cases of this disease are identified in the country each year. Since the beginning of this year, 219 cases of tuberculosis have been registered, including 16 among foreigners. Notably, a citizen of India, where the prevalence of the disease is very high, has so far been the only infected individual from that country. The Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) has initiated an epidemiological investigation and is checking individuals who may have come into contact with the infected person. In particular, his colleagues at work, apartment neighbors, and classmates will undergo examination. At the same time, the SPKC emphasized that visitors to the kebab shop who consumed food prepared by the infected employee should not fear transmission through food. Tuberculosis is transmitted through the air, not through cooked dishes. The Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) has also begun an inspection of the establishment where the infected person worked. It has been reported that the Indian citizen was found on the street last Friday and was subsequently taken to the hospital. Currently, his condition is assessed as serious. However, it is possible that the cause of his severe condition is not tuberculosis itself, but the potential use of prohibited substances.
