Latvia has signed an agreement with the Canadian defense equipment manufacturer Galvion for the supply of tactical helmet systems for the needs of the National Armed Forces. According to the LETA agency, citing the State Center for Defense Logistics and Procurement (VALIC), the contract is for five years and provides for the possibility of acquiring the necessary protective equipment throughout this period. This is a framework agreement that creates conditions for future purchases. The specific number of helmets and the total cost of supplies are not specified in the announcement. ### Not Just Supplies, But Also Maintenance The uniqueness of the agreement lies in the fact that it covers the entire lifecycle of the equipment. In addition to the acquisition of helmets, it includes their maintenance, repair, and subsequent disposal. According to VALIC, this approach is intended to ensure long-term availability of protective equipment for servicemen and more efficient use of resources. The five-year term of the agreement allows for organizing purchases based on the needs of the army, without being limited to a one-time delivery. ### One of the First Contracts with Canada Under SAFE The agreement was concluded using the European Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, designed to support defense investments and joint procurement. VALIC notes that this is one of the first contracts of its kind between a European Union member state and a Canadian company. The document also provides for the possibility of other countries joining the established procurement system. This will allow for joint procurement of equipment and expand international cooperation in the defense sector. ### Canada Plays a Key Role in NATO's Presence in Latvia Cooperation with the Canadian manufacturer occurs against the backdrop of already existing close defense ties between Latvia and Canada. Canada is the leading country of the multinational NATO brigade stationed in Latvia. Previously, Ottawa extended its leadership of this formation until April 2029. Thus, the new agreement expands practical cooperation between the two countries in military supply, complementing the interaction within the framework of NATO allied forces' presence in Latvia. @VALIC_LV has signed a 5-year framework agreement with Canadian manufacturer Galvion.
