Currently, car owners must pay an annual transport tax, the amount of which depends on the characteristics of the vehicle. The amount does not directly depend on how often the car is used or how many kilometers its owner drives. The proposed initiative suggests a different approach: to completely abolish the annual tax for individuals and include the corresponding tax burden in the existing fuel excise tax. Thus, payment will occur gradually – with each refueling of the car. ## What advantages do the authors of the initiative see? - A fairer payment system. Those who use their cars more frequently and consume more fuel will contribute more to maintaining road infrastructure. Car owners who drive rarely will be able to pay less. - Fewer mandatory expenses. Owners will not have to pay the annual transport tax separately, including for a car that is used only occasionally. - Reduced administrative burden. The tax payment will be automatically included in the fuel price, without the need to separately monitor the annual payment. - Experience from neighboring countries. The justification for the initiative cites the example of Lithuania and Estonia, where, according to the authors, a similar principle of including the corresponding tax burden in the fuel price is applied.
