It is believed that the downed drone could have been Ukrainian and deviated from its course; however, its wreckage has not yet been found, reports [TV3 News](https://tv3.lv/zinas/latvija/noribeja-visa-maja-tilzas-iedzivotaji-stasta-par-nakti-kad-latvija-ielidoja-un-nogazas-drons/). ### Night Alarm and Explosion near Tilja Residents of Balvi and Ludza municipalities received an orange-level threat warning at 00:10. It was in effect for just under half an hour. The cause was a drone that entered Latvia's airspace amid ongoing military actions by Russia against Ukraine. NATO fighter jets and two interceptor drones from the National Armed Forces (NAF) were deployed to respond to the threat. In the Tilja area, locals heard a loud explosion. Preliminary information suggests that the sound could be related to the self-destruction of one of Latvia's interceptor drones. The second interceptor returned safely. The drone that violated the country's airspace is believed to have fallen in the Balvi region. Its wreckage is still being searched for. Until the aircraft is found, it is impossible to determine whether it was equipped with explosives. ### "It felt like something was crashing into the house" Tilja resident Cynthia recorded the events of the night on video. The recording captures sounds resembling those of passing fighter jets. > "I myself am getting scared. Oh, I see... I don't know if it's a drone," the woman says off-camera. Cynthia is raising several children. According to her, residents in the border area have somewhat gotten used to military aircraft and threat alerts, but the events of that night were particularly frightening. > "I woke up just from hearing the sound—it felt like something was crashing into the house, like a truck driving down the road or something like that," the woman recalls. At first, she thought she was hearing military aviation and did not pay much attention to it: exercises are regularly conducted in the area. But then there was an explosion. > "I heard a huge explosion. The whole house shook," Cynthia said. ### "The children sense that we are worried" According to the woman, such incidents are particularly hard for families with children. Even if adults try to remain calm, children hear what is happening and notice their parents' anxiety. > "You can tell a child anything, but they hear and see everything themselves. I assume they also sense that we are worried—they are anxious," Cynthia says. After a sleepless night, life goes on: adults need to go to work, and children to school. > "And the next day goes on as it goes. We all need to get up for work, for school, and it’s actually quite hard," the woman admits. ### Residents discuss where the explosion might have occurred On Tuesday morning, the events of the previous night became the main topic of conversation in the local store. Saleswoman Inguna, who lives in a neighboring municipality to Tilja, said that customers were sharing their impressions. Some were awakened by alerts on their mobile phones, while others heard the fighter jets and a sound resembling an explosion. Locals speculate that it might have occurred near the border of Tilja and Krishjanov municipalities. There is no official confirmation of the exact location yet. Inguna herself received the alert along with her husband. > "Of course, we immediately heard the jets flying. Nothing else, we certainly didn’t go outside the house," she said. According to the woman, people react to such incidents differently: some are very worried, while others try to stay calm. > "It was unpleasant, very unpleasant, because you don’t know—it’s dark, it’s night outside, and you just don’t know where and what will happen next," Inguna says. ### Military officials suggest the drone was Ukrainian The Latvian armed forces have video footage taken by one of the interceptor drones. Preliminary assessments suggest that a Ukrainian drone deviated from its intended route and entered Latvia's airspace. However, it has not yet been definitively established where it came from. The search for wreckage continues. Only after the aircraft is found will specialists be able to assess its type, equipment, and the circumstances of its fall in more detail. ### Second drone incident in a few days This incident marks the second case of a drone violating Latvia's airspace in recent days. On the evening of November 1, an aircraft, presumably a Russian drone of the "Geran" type, briefly entered the country. It crossed Latvia's air border and then returned to Russian territory. At that time, a threat alert was announced in the Kraslava and Ludza regions. During this incident, the NAF deployed its own interceptor drone for the first time. However, to prevent the aircraft from crossing into Russian territory, a decision was made for its self-destruction. Thus, in just a few days, Latvian military forces had to deploy interception measures against drones that violated the country's airspace twice.
