U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged that the war with Iran was one of the factors that influenced the results of the midterm elections in Congress, in which the Republican Party suffered a defeat. He made this statement in a telephone interview with Fox News, as reported by LETA citing AFP. > “I think part of it had to do with Iran, but at the same time, people understood how important what I did regarding Iran was,” said the American president. At the same time, Trump did not take responsibility for his party's failure and implied that the results could have been completely different if he had participated in the voting himself. ### “If I Were on the Ballot, We Would Have Won” During the election campaign, the 80-year-old president repeatedly urged Republican supporters to vote as if he were the candidate himself. However, after the first forecasts of a Democratic victory emerged, Trump stated that his absence from the ballots was a significant factor in the defeat. > “I wasn’t on the ballot, and if I had been, we would have won by a landslide! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the president wrote on his social network Truth Social. Thus, Trump effectively distanced himself from the Republicans' results, despite actively participating in their campaign. ### Trump Promised to Accept Election Results Unlike the situation after the 2020 presidential election, when Trump contested his defeat, this time he expressed his willingness to accept the voting results. In an interview with the New York Times, the president emphasized that he does not intend to question the election results. > “I am fully prepared to accept these results,” Trump said. He also expressed his willingness to cooperate with the Democrats, who, according to forecasts, will gain a majority in both chambers of Congress. > “We will work with the Democrats and, you know, we look forward to working with them. We will probably come up with something,” the American leader stated. ### President Unexpectedly Praised Democrats In a conversation with Fox News, Trump also acknowledged that his political opponents ran a successful campaign. > “I think the Democrats did a good job. I really believe that. I think they worked hard. They fought hard,” the president said. According to him, public sentiment influenced the voting results by the time of the elections. At the same time, Trump added that he does not consider himself guilty for the Republicans' defeat. ### One Word on the Red Cap: “VETO” Despite statements about his willingness to cooperate with the Democrats, Trump has already hinted at how he intends to oppose their legislative initiatives. The president published an image of his famous red MAGA baseball cap, which instead of the usual slogan had one word written on it — “VETO.” Thus, the American leader reminded of his constitutional right to block bills passed by Congress. To override a presidential veto, both chambers of Congress need to reapprove the bill by a two-thirds majority. Therefore, even with Democrats controlling both chambers, Trump will retain significant power to influence the legislative process. ### Democrats Regain Control of Congress According to forecasts from American television channels, the Democratic Party won the midterm elections on November 3 and is regaining control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress. The Democrats secured a majority in the House of Representatives and also took at least six seats in the Senate from the Republicans. Among the states where Republicans are projected to have lost Senate seats are traditionally conservative South Carolina, Kansas, and Texas. If these forecasts are confirmed, the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency will take place in a context of confrontation with a Congress controlled by Democrats. This could complicate the passage of laws, budget approval, and the appointment of high-ranking officials. At the same time, the final election results will be established after the vote counting is completed.
