Both intersections are equipped with regulated pedestrian crossings. Pedestrians do not need to press a button to cross the street: the traffic light signals switch automatically, allowing them to cross the roadway at a certain stage of the traffic light cycle. The feature of the new traffic lights is that they can independently adjust to the intensity of traffic. If there are few cars in a certain direction, the green signal lasts for a shorter time. When the traffic flow increases, the duration of the green signal is automatically extended. Thus, the operation of the traffic lights adapts to the road situation in real time. The local government explains that such a system allows for more efficient traffic organization at intersections while ensuring pedestrian safety. Additional lighting has also been installed at both intersections. It is planned to be turned on after the official commissioning of the facilities. In the near future, a new traffic light is expected to start operating on Melnsila Street, near house No. 23, where a regulated pedestrian crossing has been set up. The Riga City Council emphasizes that the installation of new and modernization of existing traffic lights is part of a program to improve the urban transport infrastructure. Its goal is to enhance traffic organization and increase the safety of pedestrians and other road users.
