It was confirmed that Kalvins' request to include the issue of his recall in the agenda was received at the end of October. Since the agenda for the meeting scheduled for November 26 had already been approved by that time, the Senate will need to make a separate decision. The meeting will begin at 10:00. Stengrevica promises to publish the final agenda after the Senate's decision. In the event of Kalvins' recall, a new president will not be elected automatically, as the statutes of the Academy provide for a separate candidate nomination procedure. Valid members of the academy, its divisions, or commissions created by them can propose candidates. Motivated proposals must be submitted to the Senate no later than 30 days before the general meeting where the elections will take place. An extraordinary meeting can also be convened to elect a president. According to the statutes, the recall of officials of the Academy can be initiated by the Senate or by at least 25 valid members and/or corresponding members of the academy, among whom there must be at least ten valid members. The Senate decides whether to include the issue in the agenda, and at least two-thirds of the votes of the present members of the academy are required for the recall in a secret ballot. The general meeting also sets the deadlines for electing a new official. As reported, at the end of October, Kalvins circulated an open letter stating that he was considering resigning due to the situation surrounding his recommendation to grant Latvian citizenship to Indian citizen Divya Vishwanath. On October 15, the Saeima adopted a law granting Vishwanath citizenship, but on October 22, it revoked this decision after doubts arose in the public sphere regarding her education, scientific publications, and the justification for granting citizenship. The Presidium of the Academy previously stated that Kalvins acted within his authority, and the recommendation letter was prepared in good faith based on the information provided to him. The Prosecutor General's Office has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Vishwanath's acquisition of Latvian citizenship. The role of the Academy in such cases and the circumstances of granting citizenship to Vishwanath's husband - Kanan Vishwanath - will also be assessed.
